Record-breaker Guan Tian-lang completed his fairytale Masters Tournament debut with a three over par 75 at Augusta National as he took the leading amateur crown.
The 14 year old, who was already The European Tour’s youngest competitor after he featured in the Volvo China Open as a 13 year old, finished on 12 over par for the week and was 59th of the 61 competitors to make the weekend as the early starters finished their rounds.
Already the youngest player in Masters history at the start of the week, China’s Guan also surpassed Matteo Manassero as the youngest player to make the cut – the Italian was 16 when he achieved the feat in 2010 – and that guaranteed him the award for best amateur as no others reached the weekend.
The Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion’s achievements were all the more impressive as he had to overcome a one shot slow play penalty on Friday; eventually scraping through to the weekend on four over courtesy of the ten shot rule.
Asked is taking the low amateur crown was the highlight of his career so far, Guan replied: “I think so, it’s such a great week for me. I think the first couple rounds I played pretty good. I feel a little bit tired today.
“There’s still a lot to improve – my short game is good but needs to be better and my driver needs to be longer – everything needs to improve.
“The whole week is great for me and I really enjoyed it, I’ve been having fun.”
