Great Minds Gather at Blackstone

Some of the game's best decision makers will be put to the test over the Blackstone course in Korea this week.

Star players gather to launch the 2011 Ballantine's Champioship

This is a new venue for the championship, which had previously been held at the Pinx Golf Club on the island of Jeju, and Blackstone will present a particular mental challenge for the golfers, as it was designed to be a "thinking player's course".

To mark the move to Blackstone, Ballantine's has been exploring the key role that decision making plays in success on the golf course, as well as in business and life in general.

Star players such as Lee Westwood, Ernie Els and YE Yang have been reflecting on the subject, and media attending the event will select a "Decision of the Day" for each day's play.

What has already become clear is that certain holes on the course will be a particular test of a player's decision making abilities.

Both the 15th and the 18th, two of the par fives, offer a classic decision whether to play for the green in two.

On the 15th, deciding to do so means flirting with the water in front of the green but may well tempt some of the bigger hitters.

Dustin Johnson, for one, is clear what his decision will be. The American, one of the longest hitters in the game, said: "If I can get there on the 15th, I'm going for it. If not you've got to lay up and you're still back about 150 yards. This is always my approach.

"Good decision making on the course is vital. You just have to go with what you feel. If you feel like that's your best shot, then you do it."

Meanwhile the 18th also offers a realistic eagle opportunity, but only for golfers prepared to cut across the dog leg off the tee onto a narrow landing area.

Mark Gardiner, who drew up the player yardage book on behalf of the European Tour this week, said: "The 18th is a fantastic hole. It's classic risk-reward, and provides a big decision for the players to make."
