On a day when scoring was expected to prove difficult, the experienced South African, who won this event in 1999 but began with a 77 on Thursday, carded six birdies to move into a tie for 15th on one under.

Noren and Hansen were five and four under respectively, and the former was joined on that number by George Coetzee, who birdied the first for the second day in succession.

Raphaël Jacquelin and Francesco Molinari also made up ground on the opening hole to sit alongside Hansen at four under, with a host of other players in close contention on a congested leaderboard.

Another South African, Richard Sterne, birdied four of his opening eight holes to move to three under for the tournament, only to lose ground with a bogey at the long ninth.
