The 42 year old, a four-time European Tour winner, had four birdies in his first 12 holes to move alongside 2011 Masters Champion Schwartzel on eight under par, the South African having claimed the first round lead with a sizzling 64.

Schwartzel was yet to tee off his second round – he was playing with his friend Louis Oosthuizen, who recorded an impressive opening 66 after the disappointment of losing a play-off to Bubba Watson for the Green Jacket on Sunday.

Two of their compatriots were also going well on the course, with Hennie Otto and Jbe Kruger joining Jeev Milkha Singh in a share of third place on seven under.

Otto was six under for the day with three holes remaining, while Avantha Masters champion Kruger was five under through 11.

World Number Seven Martin Kaymer moved ominously to six under par with five birdies and a single bogey over his first 14 holes following an opening round of 70.
