#GolfForGood: Duke named second local hero winner at Hero Open

Wayne Duke has been named as the second local hero as the European Tour’s new Golf for Good initiative continued at the Hero Open.

One of the key pillars of the Golf for Good initiative is rewarding everyday heroes of the Covid 19 pandemic with unforgettable experiences and prizes.

During all six events in the UK Swing, the European Tour is inviting fans to nominate everyday heroes who have had a positive impact on their community in recent months.

Duke, 46, was nominated by his daughter Abigail, who praised her paramedic father's hard work during the global health crisis.

One of the prizes as a thank you for all the extra hours he has put in since March as a front line worker is an Odyssey Putter to add to his bag.

"I'm nominating my dad, Wayne Duke, because he is a paramedic who has been working for the NHS for over 20 years, and of March, a front line worker during the coronavirus pandemic," Abigail's nomination read.

"He works extremely hard to make sure that everyone stays safe, is exceptionally skilled at what he does, and he always provides excellent care to anyone who needs it.

"My dad has worked long and hard throughout the pandemic, putting in extra hours and carrying out tests for the virus in the local community. Even at his busiest, I still see him practising his golf skills around the house.

"He has also been a great support to my mum, me and my whole family and so not only is he a hero in the community, but he's also my family's hero.

"He is truly amazing and definitely deserves a reward for his hard work."

Duke also has the luxury of a one year membership at Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club - which is a 45 minute journey from his Leicester home - and wins a year's supply of Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls courtesy of European Tour Official Partner Callaway.

"I'm very humbled by it," he said. "I'm only a very small, tiny cog in the big machine of the NHS."

Duke was told of his win by Tommy Fleetwood, who was rightly full of praise for the vital work Wayne has been doing.

"You're one of them very special people so congratulations and thank you," said Fleetwood.

"You all play such a massive part and you can only do your bit. By the sounds of it, you're going above and beyond and doing amazing. I'm grateful that I get the chance to speak to you."

Exciting experiences and prizes will be announced during at the remaining four events in the UK Swing, which are:

• English Championship, Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Ware, Hertfordshire - August 6-9

• Celtic Classic, The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport - August 13-16

• Wales Open, The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport - August 20-23
