Golf La Graiera to host the Challenge de Cataluña

Club de Golf La Graiera, a spectacular course immersed in natural pine forests in Tarragona, on Spain’s Costa Dorada, will host the Challenge de Cataluña from September 27-30.

The inaugural tournament, which takes place one month before the season-ending Apulia San Domenico Grand Final, will be the second event played on Spanish soil, following this week’s Fred Olsen Challenge de España.

The €160,000 event will be promoted by the Catalan Golf Federation and Madrid Golf Federation, in partnership with MatchGolf.

Bastiaan Guis, President at La Graiera Golf, said: “We are very proud to begin the re-launch of La Graiera by staging an event on the Challenge Tour, which has considered our course good enough to host a competition at this high level.

“We are working hard not only on the golf course, but also on the practice facilities and the new clubhouse, which will be opened next June. Our aim is for La Graiera to become one of the best golf courses in Cataluña over the next few years, and we are doing everything we can to present the course and facilities in the best possible conditions to welcome the Challenge Tour.”

Alberto Durán, President of the Catalan Golf Federation, said: “On behalf of the three Federations involved in this project – Spanish, Madrid and Catalan – we are very happy to set up a new relationship with Golf La Graiera. Our aim is to promote golf in the region, and the tournament is also the result of the Federations’s shared aim to help young Spanish players who are starting out in their professional careers by enabling them to receive invitations to play in other countries.

“As part of this agreement, the event will be played each year in Madrid and Cataluña, starting this year in Tarragona. Through the agreement, we hope to increase the number of Spanish players on the Challenge Tour and The European Tour.”

Miguel Vidaor, Tournament Director of the Challenge de Cataluña, said: “Last week we had our second planning meeting at La Graiera, and we are very satisfied with the improvements they have made to host the Challenge de Cataluña. We are happy to increase the number of Challenge Tour events in Spain, thanks to the combined efforts of the Spanish, Catalan and Madrid Federations.”
