Golding and Woosnam start well in The Netherlands

Phil Golding started where he left off in France last week by claiming the early lead at the Dutch Senior Open at The International, on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

The Englishman won last week’s French Riviera Masters and took that form into the start of his opening round in The Netherlands, making two birdies in his first three holes, before going on to post a five under par 68.

That left him one shot clear of Argentina’s Jorge Berendt, who was four under par through his first 13 holes, with Jerry Bruner and George Ryall a further shot back, after both carded three under par rounds of 70.

Another man to master the blustery conditions was Ian Woosnam, who designed The International course together with Bruno Steensels.

The former Ryder Cup captain, who started from the tenth tee, carded birdies on the third, ninth and 18th holes, with the only blemish on his scorecard coming at the seventh.

“I’m happy with that,” said the Welsh Major Champion. “I was struggling with my back in the early part of the round, so I’m pleased to get it round in two under.

“The conditions were difficult out there but I managed to hit 17 greens. You’d take that any day of the week.”
