Garcia takes share of Augusta lead

Sergio Garcia took a share of the clubhouse lead with a brilliant 69 on day two of the Masters Tournament.

The Spaniard is searching for a first Major Championship at the 74th attempt and while he has 22 top tens, only three of those have come at Augusta National.

But with the course playing as difficult as it has for many years due to high winds, Garcia looked right at home, making six birdies to join Charley Hoffman on four under.

American Hoffman followed his stunning opening 65 with a 75, and the leading duo were two shots clear of another American in William McGirt.

Rickie Fowler was also at two under after picking up three shots in his first seven holes to sit ahead of Ryan Moore, who signed for a 69.

Spaniard Jon Rahm was also at one under with one hole to play, alongside former champions Fred Couples, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott.

Matthew Fitzpatrick, Thomas Pieters and Justin Rose were then all at level par playing the front nine.

Garcia got off to a blistering start, putting his approach to the first to 12 feet, leaving a short chip into the green after two on the par five second and holing a 22-footer on the third.

He missed the green to drop a shot on the par three fourth and at that point Hoffman's lead was up to five shots after a birdie on the second.

But the leader missed the green off the tee on the par three sixth, played his third on the next over the green and another poor third shot on the par five eighth resulted in three bogeys in a row.

Garcia then put his approach to the ninth to seven feet as Hoffman bogeyed the tenth and 11th.

Bogeys on the tenth and 13th saw Garcia slip back while Hoffman birdied the 13th but an excellent second to the par five 15th and approach to the penultimate hole saw him back in a share.

Rahm made up for a double-bogey on the tenth with birdies on the second, eighth, 11th and 12th.

Scott turned in 32 to put himself in contention while Couples was two under for the day after seven holes and Mickelson was level after five.

Fitzpatrick, Pieters and Rose were all level par for the day after six, eight and four holes respectively.

World Number Two Rory McIlroy was at one over alongside Søren Kjeldsen and Andy Sullivan.
