Sergio Garcia came from behind to win his WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship second round contest against Bill Haas.

The Spaniard lost the second and seventh as he fell two holes behind in Arizona, but won three of the next five to turn the contest on its head.

The Ryder Cup star lost the 13th but again bounced back with a birdie at the 14th and par at the 16th leaving him two up with two to play.

Garcia birdied the 17th to secure a 3 and 1 victory and progress to face Rickie Fowler in the last 16, the American overcoming the US PGA Tour’s form player Jimmy Walker one up.

“It was good fun,” said Garcia. “Like I said before, we both played hard.

“We both tried to play as good as we could to beat our opponent and I was fortunate to be just a little bit better than him today.”

A total of 15 European Tour Members had made it through to the second round at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, and in Garcia’s Ben Hogan bracket Charl Schwartzel was also well placed as he went two up on Jim Furyk through seven holes.

The South African was on course to set up a last-16 clash with Rory McIlroy, although the Northern Irishman was still all square with Harris English at the turn.

Another South African, Richard Sterne, was two up on Hunter Mahan after six, but potential Friday opponent Graeme McDowell had fallen three behind to Hideki Matsuyama – although the Northern Irishman had overturned a similar deficit late on against Gary Woodland on day one.

Victor Dubuisson was two up on Peter Hanson in an all-European affair, with another Swede in Jonas Blixt also two down to Bubba Watson in the match below.

Louis Oosthuizen raced three up on Henrik Stenson through five holes, with Ernie Els one up on fellow Major Champion Justin Rose and Matteo Manassero two holes clear of Jason Dufner.

McIlroy lost the tenth, 11th and 13th to pars but birdied the 12th and holed a five footer at the 14th to be only one down, with Furyk on course to meet the winner after turning his match with Schwartzel around with three holes in a row from the 11th.

McDowell had reduced his arrears to one with six to play, while Watson saw off Blixt as the Swede lost his ball under a bush at the 17th.

Manassero reached the turn one up, as Rose squared his contest with Els and Stenson won the sixth to be two down against Oosthuizen.
