The tournament host has won five European Tour events in his home country, including the last staging of this here at Real Club Valderrama in 2011, and made four birdies to turn in 32 and get to four under alongside Robert Rock.

The Englishman was also bogey-free in his first ten holes and countryman Andrew Johnston - playing alongside Garcia - was then a shot back.

Johnston won at this venue last year as he made is European Tour breakthrough at the Real Club Valderrama Open de España, hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation.

Another Englishman in Paul Waring was then at two under with 14 players at one under.

Rock set the early pace with birdies on the second, third, fifth and ninth but was soon joined by Garcia who started on the tenth.

The 13-time European Tour winner made gains on his first, the 12th, the 15th and the 18th, with Johnston making birdies on the tenth, 11th and 17th.

Waring made a fast start with birdies on the tenth and 11th in his first three holes.

Dutchman Joost Luiten, Danish veteran Søren Kjeldsen and home favourite Pep Angles were then among the group at one under.
