Garcia seeks success on home soil

Sergio Garcia plays in this week's Madrid Masters looking to ignite an end of season charge to finish first in The Race to Dubai.

PGA Championship - Round Two

The 28 year old claimed the first title of The Race to Dubai at the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai, but he has since dropped to 12th and is over €900,000 behind new leader Rory McIlroy.

But the first prize at Centro Nacional de Golf is €250,000 - and there are some massive events coming up as the Spaniard looks to become European Number One for the first time.

It was his victory in China 11 months ago - after a play-off with Oliver Wilson - that took Garcia to second place on the World Rankings.

Garcia even had the chance to overtake Woods as World Number One in Miami this March. He had to win the World Golf Championships - CA Championship - and Woods, playing the second event of his comeback from knee surgery, had to finish outside the top 26.

That did not materialise, and still no European has been top since Nick Faldo in 1994. Garcia said: "It would be nice to accomplish something like that - and more than anything when Tiger is around, which is even tougher."

After two weeks off Garcia returns to action against a field that includes Luke Donald, Darren Clarke, Paul Lawrie and José Maria Olazábal.
