Garcia reigns in desert and moves to third in Race to Dubai

The 37-year-old sealed 410,225 points to move into third place in the European Tour‘s Race to Dubai rankings as he edges closer to taking his place in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, hosted by Jumeirah Golf Estates from November 16-19.

Garcia carded an inspired final round 69 at the Emirates Golf Club to tighten his grip on his overnight lead and clinched the title in his first European Tour appearance of the season, with last year’s Race to Dubai champion Henrik Stenson ending the week as runner-up, three shots behind, shooting a closing 69.

Denmark's Lasse Jensen shared third place with the 2016 DP World Tour Championship runner-up, England’s Tyrrell Hatton, after firing a round-of-the-day 65, while fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick, winner of last year’s DP World Tour Championship, was a further shot adrift along with the USA's Peter Uihlein.

Starting the final round with a three-shot lead, Garcia made a six-foot birdie at the first but saw Stenson respond with a gain of his own at the par-four sixth.

Garcia temporarily moved four shots ahead after picking up a shot at the ninth, as Stenson holed a 20-foot birdie at the 10th but bogeyed the 12th.
Stenson's hopes faded with a missed birdie opportunity from 10 feet at the 16th, where Garcia hit a clever bump and run to save par, before the Swede closed his final-round with a two-putt birdie.

The reigning Open Champion's runner-up finish won him 273,483 points that helped him surge into sixth place from 42nd in the Race to Dubai rankings on a season tally of 330,253.

Hatton and Jensen each gained 138,576 points, with Hatton moving from 62nd to 16th while Jensen climbed to 23rd after his first tournament of the season.

Uihlein and Fitzpatrick both claimed 95,256 points as the American moved from 44th to 19th and the reigning DP World Tour Championship winner rose to 32nd.

Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello solidified his fourth place in the Race to Dubai following his shared 11th place finish with compatriot Nacho Elvira, gaining 43,813 points and increasing his season tally to 351,728.
