Garcia makes Masters move

Sergio Garcia cut Charley Hoffman's lead to one shot as Rory McIlroy moved up the leaderboard on day two of the Masters Tournament.

A stunning 65 in windy conditions on day one handed the American a four-shot advantage overnight and he extended that to five early on Friday in continuing gusts.

But three bogeys in a row saw him turn in 38 and Spaniard Garcia was on hand to pounce, making four birdies on the front nine to move to four under.

William McGirt was then the clubhouse leader at two under, a shot clear of McIlroy, Dane  Søren Kjeldsen, Spaniard Jon Rahm and American Ryan Moore.

Matthew Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose and Andy Sullivan were also four shots off the lead but they had yet to begin their second rounds.

Garcia got off to a blistering start, putting his approach to the first to 12 feet, leaving a short chip into the green after two on the par five second and holing a 22-footer on the third.

He missed the green to drop a shot on the par four third and at that point Hoffman's lead was up to five shots after a birdie on the second.

But the leader missed the green off the tee on the par three sixth, played his third on the next over the green and another poor third shot on the par five eighth resulted in three bogeys in a row.

Garcia then put his approach to the ninth to seven feet to get within one shot of the lead.

McIlroy hit the longest drive of the week on the second with his 393-yard effort helping to earn a birdie but that was sandwiched by a pair of bogeys.

An incredible second from way right to 12 feet on the fifth brought a second birdie and when he chipped in on the next, he was all of a sudden just four shots off the lead after eight holes.

Kjledsen finished in the top ten here last season and was clearly feeling at home again as he took advantage of the second to sit alongside McIlroy at one under after two holes.

Rahm had birdies on the second and eighth in his first eight holes, while Moore was three under for the day with three to play.

McGirt had earlier made three bogeys and two birdies in a 73.
