Scotland, Australia, Portugal and France all claimed wins as the inaugural GolfSixes got under way at the Centurion Club.
The European Tour was breaking new ground with 16 teams of two battling it out over six holes in a greensomes format, with entrance music, pyrotechnics and a bumper crowd making for an exciting spectacle.
The teams were split into groups of four and were battling it out in a round robin format on Saturday, with the top two from each group progressing to the knockout stages on Sunday.
Scotland and France's wins moved them to the top of Groups B and D respectively, while Portugal and Australia set the pace in Group C and both round one matches in Group A ended in draws.
There was huge excitement and anticipation on the first tee as England and India got us under way in Group A, with two impressive tee-shots leading to two pars and no score with both teams also sharing the second.
An eagle on the par five third then put the England team of Andy Sullivan and Chris Wood 1-0 ahead but back-to-back birdies from SSP Chawrasia and S Chikkarangappa on the fourth and fifth edged India ahead.
England then won the last with India three-putting and the match was drawn 2-2.
Denmark and the Netherlands also drew their first match 1-1 with Thorbjørn Olesen and Lucas Bjerregaard making a birdie on the first but Joost Luiten and Reinier Saxton hit back with a gain on the fifth.
Scotland claimed the first win of the day in Group B as Marc Warren and Richie Ramsay beat the Belgian Pair of Nicolas Colsaerts and Thomas Detry 3-2.
A par on the first gave Scotland the lead but Belgium hit back with a birdie on the second before the Scots went 2-1 up with a birdie of their own on the third. A Belgian birdie on the fourth levelled the scores again but a Scotland eagle on the par five sixth sealed victory.
The other match in Group B ended 1-1 after a birdie-littered encounter between Thailand and Spain.
Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat birdied the second before both teams made gains on the third and a birdie from Pablo Larrazábal and Jorge Campillo made it 1-1 on the fifth. Both teams then made a third birdie in six holes on the last.
Portugal took control of Group C on hole difference with an emphatic 4-0 win over Wales.
The Welsh team of Jamie Donaldson and Bradley Dredge were one under for their six holes but could not keep pace with Ricardo Gouveia and José-Filipe Lima who made gains on the first, third, fourth, fifth and last.
Australia also claimed three points in Group C with a bogey from Paul Peterson and David Lipsky of the United States on the second handing Sam Brazel and Scott Hend a 1-0 lead they would not give up.
France took the initiative in Group D as they beat Sweden 3-2.
Grégory Bourdy and Alexander Levy birdied the first but a bogey on the next made it 1-1. Johan Carlsson and Joakim Lagergren then made a first birdie of the day on the third but so did France, and they also birdied the fourth and fifth before Sweden grabbed a consolation on the sixth.
Italy and South Africa shared a scoreless draw with Darren Fichardt and Brandon Stone matching Matteo Manassero and Renato Paratore with four birdies.
