Gallacher pleased with opening effort

Stephen Gallacher was pleased to get his US PGA Championship campaign under way with a one under par 71 at Whistling Straits.

The Scot, playing in his first Major Championship on American soil, was one over at the turn but two birdies in his last three holes propelled him into an early share of 15th place.

"I got off to a poor start, doubled the third hole and then dug deep and stayed patient," said Gallacher.

"It was a battle but I finished well and had some chances coming in. One under is great, any time you finish one under in a Major is great."

Gallacher was the first European out, but fog delayed play by more than three hours in Wisconsin.

"I got here at 5.45, had my breakfast and went out. Even though it was foggy you have to prepare as it could lift so quickly," he added.

"So I did my warm up and then it just came right in. Back in, another breakfast, back out for some chipping, back in for another breakfast of some toast and fruit, back out in earnest. Teed off and there was a slight delay and it never really picked up. I didn't see the ball land until the fifth hole.

"This is a great venue, brilliant setting and very picturesque. And if I have four rounds under par I will be happy at the end of the week."

Moments after Gallacher finished his round, compatriot Martin Laird reached the clubhouse one shot better after a 70.

“I played really well today,” said Laird. “The key to this course is driving it on the fairway and I drove it great all day.

“You can go for the flags and for a Major it is playing relatively easy if you drive on the fairway and I did that today.

“There’s a little breeze which is nice as takes the heat out but makes the first four or five holes into the wind tough but then you get a few downwind holes you can try and make your score on that’s what I did.”
