Gallacher delighted to be in the mix

Fifteen years after first trying Scotland's Stephen Gallacher finally made a cut in a Major - and did it in superb style.

The 35 year old added a 69 to his opening 71 when the US PGA Championship resumed at Whistling Straits, thankfully after no more fog delays.

On four under par the nephew of former Ryder Cup Captain Bernard was only four behind leader Matt Kuchar.

Gallacher, among 78 players unable to finish last night, said: "We got a bit of a break with the weather. Last night was so tough in the wind and this morning it was a bit benign and the course is soft.

"It's still tough even when it's flat calm, though, so I'm delighted with that. I didn't really drive the ball good, but my chipping was the key."

It was only two weeks ago the former Dunhill Links champion - that remains his only European Tour success in over 330 starts - was told he had an invitation to the final Major of the year.

While he comfortably made it into the final two rounds, with the third of them later in the day, it was a battle to survive for several other notables.

And there were Ryder Cup implications in it all.

Tiger Woods, requiring a top-15 finish just to have a chance of qualifying automatically for the American side, bogeyed the seventh the moment he teed off again, but birdies at the tenth and 14th took him to two under and joint 26th place.

European big guns Padraig Harrington and Paul Casey are both outside qualifying spots at the moment.

Harrington had fought back from three over to level par in brilliant fashion last night, but on his return at 7am he bogeyed the eighth and followed with seven successive pars to be one over.

That was just inside the expected cut-off mark, but he still had the demanding finish to come.

Casey also bogeyed the eighth on the resumption to be two over, but then birdied the 12th, 13th and 16th to move to one under.
