The 2011 European Senior Tour Order of Merit winner took advantage as Oldcorn dropped three shots in his opening five holes, the Scot carding bogeys on the first, third and fifth holes at Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort .

Fowler picked up a shot on the fourth, while both players then birdied the sixth to move to seven under, before Fowler took the outright lead with another birdie on the seventh hole.

Currently 11th on the Order of Merit, Fowler has three top ten finishes so far this season but is without a Senior Tour victory since the 2011 Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.

Japan’s Katsuyoshi Tomori, lying in 50th position on the Order of Merit, fired six birdies in his opening 12 holes to surge up the leaderboard, while former Masters Champion Ian Woosnam also enjoyed a fine start, reaching the turn in three under par.
