Peter Fowler, the 2011 European Senior Tour Order of Merit winner, stormed to a six shot victory in the ISPS Handa Australian Senior Open at Royal Perth Golf Club.
After starting the final round with a three stroke lead, Fowler closed with a two under par round of 70 to finish on nine under par 207, comfortably clear of joint runners up and fellow Senior Tour members Mike Harwood and David Merriman.
Fowler’s victory came 29 years after he won the Australian Open title in 1983. He joins a growing list of champions of the prestigious title including Harwood, Wayne Grady, and Peter Senior.
It also provided a timely confidence boost ahead of the Senior Tour’s finale, the MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius.
Fowler sealed the John Jacobs Trophy as Senior Tour Number One at Constance Belle Mare Plage last year, and this time round will try to consolidate his position in fourth place on the Order of Merit, which is under threat from Englishman Paul Wesselingh.
Fowler will take his winning form to Mauritius next week to contend the European Senior Tour season ending event the MCB Tour Championship.
Michael Clayton had the round of the day shooting a five under par round of 67 to finish in the tie for fourth with Tim Elliott (214).
Peter Senior was a stroke further back in sixth place with a total score of 215.
Meanwhile Germany's Bernhard Langer won the Nedbank Champions Challenge at Sun City in South Africa, finishing two strokes clear of American Jay Haas. Langer, the 2004 Ryder Cup Captain, followed opening rounds of 68 and 67 with a closing 74 for a seven under par winning total.
Welshman Ian Woosnam finished third on two under par, with Sandy Lyle fifth.
