Forsbrand opens up a Cannes of memories

Anders Forsbrand hopes returning to the scene of one of his six European Tour victories can ignite his career on the Senior Tour in this week’s Cannes Mougins Masters.

The Swede captured the1992 Cannes Open over the Cannes Mougins Course that will host the second edition of the Senior Tour event this week. That win was his second victory of 1992, the year he recorded his European Tour career best finish of fourth on the Order of Merit.

So far his Senior Tour career has yet to reach similar heights, with last week’s tied 25thposition in the Casa Serena Open his best finish in seven appearances since making his debut in the OKI Open de España Senior by Cleveland Golf/Srixon.

However the 2004 Ryder Cup Vice-Captain hopes the memories of his victory 19 years ago can inspire him to continue his return to form after nearly eight years away from competitive golf following the end of his European Tour career in 2003.

“It would be nice to come back and do well but as long as I am improving, that’s the key,” said Forsbrand. “It’s such a long time since I won here but I love the place and all the stuff around here. We always had a good time here – the food is great and the course is very good. I’m looking forward to the week.

“I don’t think I’ve seen the greens ever this good or this fast. If you are the wrong side it is difficult.  The course is in great shape. The trees are a lot taller than they used to be. I think the ninth and 12th holes play different but apart from that it is the same as when we played it in the early 1990s.”

Forsbrand, who was one of the Swedish pioneers on The European Tour in the 1980s and 1990s, heads to France knowing his putting has to improve if he is to make an impact during the remainder of his rookie campaign.

“The long game has been pretty decent but the putter has been terrible,” he said. “It’s starting to feel much, much, better now. I’m down to single digit handicap now!

“It’s fun to see the improvements. I would .like to have played more than I have and it takes a while to get to where you want.”
