The Englishman had 11 birdies and a bogey to reach 15 under par for the tournament, two shots off the lead held by Swiss Martin Rominger and Argentine Daniel Vancsik, who were both at 17 under after nine holes of the last round.

Ford was tied third alongside Scotland’s Scott Henry, who was six under through 12 holes, and Spaniard Sebi Garcia and Englishman Simon Wakefield, who were one and two under respectively at the turn.

Irishman Niall Kearney was another player on the move, reaching 14 under and a share of seventh place after 15 holes thanks to four birdies and an eagle.

Ford said: "It's the first time I've set a new course record in competition. I felt really good. Yesterday I played very well from tee to green but was terrible on the greens. Today I tried to do the same but I holed some putts and made all the short putts. I am very happy."
