A cracked driver proved beneficial for Richard Finch as he finished the KLM Open in sensational style.
The Englishman completed a closing 64, which lifted him to seven under for the tournament, with an albatross two at the 499 yard 18th.
That came after he had teed off with his three wood, due to the damage caused to his longest club.
“I’ve had a problem with my driver today,” Finch explained. “It had a crack in it, so I decided to use three wood off the tee as it was getting bigger.
“I has a six iron into the green, aiming front right, but I pulled it and it landed short, ran up the bank and across into the hole.
“I’m not sure how fast it was going when it hit the pin and went in, but that was super.”
Remarkably, Finch had earlier come close to recording another albatross on the back nine, having earlier holed a bunker shot on the fourth.
“On the other par five, the 12th, I hit a shot to four feet before the pin and ended up one foot past it,” he explained.
“If that had gone in for another albatross it would have been two in nine holes, which would have been quite scary, but I’m more than delighted with one!
“I was delighted with the round as well. I holed a bunker shot on the fourth hole for birdie too, so it was an eventful day. I hope I haven’t used up all my luck, but I think I was in credit anyway."
Today’s events prompted Finch to share a light-hearted tale.
“I had an albatross when I was an amateur in France. I holed a two iron,” he added.
“There was a nudist beach another hole later and I told myself I wasn’t allowed to look unless I birdied the par five.
“I made an albatross ... so I stood there for a good five minutes!”
