After finishing runner up in last week’s Volvo China Open, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood is keen to keep up his momentum having made the journey to Singapore for The Championship at Laguna National.
Fleetwood secured his second top five finish of 2014 with an impressive display in Shenzhen, moving up from 41st to 17th position on The Race to Dubai as a consequence.
He is now hoping to carry forward that form to Laguna National Golf & Country Club and contend once more, as he seeks a second European Tour victory.
“Sometimes it can be quite difficult after coming off such a good week to keep the momentum going, but I feel like my game is in good shape,” said Fleetwood, who plays alongside 2012 winner Bernd Wiesberger and Kiradech Aphibarnrat for the first two rounds.
“I actually felt my game was in good shape in Malaysia but missed the cut by a few, so it just shows you never know how close you are to playing really good golf. It’s nice now coming into an event with some good form again and I’m looking forward to this week and having a run of events.
“It’s great that we’ve got an event on here, especially at such short notice, so thanks to the course and sponsor. All the players are very grateful and we are all looking forward to getting out and playing this course. Hopefully I can carry the momentum on. I’ve not really had a run of events for a while, so it’s nice to be playing again and playing good golf too.”
The 23 year old, who claimed his maiden European Tour title in last year’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, is used to getting off to a fast start in tournaments, but after opening with a round of 70 in China, he showed he can challenge by climbing the leaderboard as well.
“Last week was the first time I’ve actually moved my way into a tournament and got progressively better during the week,” he said. “Unfortunately I just wasn’t playing quite as well as Alex.
“Improving during the week is something I’ve just never done, I don’t know why. I’ve talked about it with my team, about why I’ve not worked my way up in a tournament. So it was nice to know I can do it. There are plenty of ways to get the result you want, and that’s another way which I know I can do now.”
