Fleetwood hoping to build on strong finish

Tommy Fleetwood feels his fantastic finish at the 2022 US PGA Championship can give him a timely confidence boost heading into an important period of the season.

The Englishman began the day nine shots off the lead but he produced five birdies in six holes on the back nine to sign for a closing 67 and finish the tournament on three under par.

That was good enough for a share of fifth place at the second Major Championship of the year and Fleetwood is hoping to reap the rewards in the weeks to come.

Fleetwood said: "To come out in a Major and play solid and do that, it gives you a boost and gives you some confidence going into the next period. 

"I mean, it's busy now, and with two Majors left, every week is a big event always these days.

"It's nice that I'm sort of racking up what I feel is really good golf.

"Again, whether I finished fifth today or 20th or 25th, I'd have felt like I've played very similar every day. Not really having one round where I can't seem to get it around and I'm hitting it all over the place.

"Again, there are more positives, and keep pushing on."

Fleetwood finished in a tie for 14th at the 2022 Masters Tournament to secure his best career finish at Augusta National, and he has recorded his best US PGA Championship result this week too.

The five-time DP World Tour winner is hoping for more of the same at the remaining two Majors this year.

He added: "The Masters was my best finish that I've ever had in a Masters. This is the best finish I've ever had at the PGA.

"If I can keep that train going, the other two should be decent weeks."

Fleetwood's fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick also finished on three under after Sunday's 73.

He said: "I shoot level par today and I win it outright. If someone had said that before the round, I'd have fully prepared myself to do that.

"You know your target and get it around. It wasn't the day that I wanted, and it is what it is unfortunately."
