On a day of low scoring five players are tied for the lead after the first round of the Peugeot Open de Espana. Juan Carlos Aguero and Ignacio Garrido shot seven-under-par 65's to share the lead with Sweden’s Max Anglert and England’s Jamie Spence and Anthony Wall. Another Spaniard Sergio Garcia, making his professional debut, lies two shots off the pace.
Aguero, 23, an invitee from Seve Ballesteros’s home club of Pedrena, started with an eagle and four birdies in the opening five holes. Another birdie on the last took him round in 65.
Wall shot an unblemished 65 while Anglert took only 11 putts in his last 11 holes for his 65. Garrido, a member of the victorious European Ryder Cup team in 1997, chipped in for an eagle on the last to take him to seven under par. Spence had nine birdies on his way to a 65.
Garcia made a dream start to his professional career by picking up three birdies in the first four holes at Real Club de Golf ‘El Prat’, Garcia briefly held the lead until a bogey on the seventh. He then picked up another three birdies during the round.
He said: “I had no nerves at all at the start because I feel comfortable at a course where I have won four times before and where I know the people love me.”
His opening drive was a perfect draw, 283 yards down the middle of the fairway. “It’s always a dream to hit a shot like that as your first one as a pro,” he said. “I came to the course determined to be focused and that’s how I stayed.”
