Fitzpatrick looking to maintain momentum at Close House

Matthew Fitzpatrick is hoping to once again produce a big finish to his season as he prepares to tee it up at the British Masters supported by Sky Sports.

Matthew Fitzpatrick

The Englishman claimed his first European Tour win at this event in 2015 and, after prevailing at the Nordea Masters the following June, took home the biggest trophy of his career so far at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai in November.

Title number four came last time out at the Omega European Masters and while Fitzpatrick is not sure why he finds his form late in the campaign, he is determined to continue the trend.

"I didn't have a good summer and I'm finding a bit of form now coming to the end of the season," he said.

"I always love playing the end of season events, it's always a nice stretch. You have this, Dunhill, Italy and you have the sort of Final Series as well and playing the WGC. So some good courses coming up, yeah, just really looking forward to the end of the year.

"I've been trying to find the right thing and the right balance and what I'm working on for the whole year, really. I think I've got something now, found it in the Czech Republic.

"It was a tough one. I've not really had a great summer for a while. I've not played well in those events since the Irish Open but that was early in the year in 2015.

"It's just one of those things, I felt like I was certainly working hard enough and trying to figure it out but it just didn't happen."

You always want to come and play the British Masters in front of the British crowds. It's always a great tournament to play - Matthew Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick is delighted to be back at the event where he had his first taste of European Tour glory but with some of the biggest names in the game teeing it up this week, he does not expect any favouritism from the crowd.

"It means a lot," he said. "It's one of the first ones down on this schedule. It's a very cliché remark, that, but it's true. You always want to come and play the British Masters in front of the British crowds. It's always a great tournament to play.

"It was really interesting last night, playing the Hero Challenge, I felt the biggest cheer was for Sergio (Garcia)," he said.

"So in terms of crowd aspect, I think everyone loves Sergio and they love Martin Kaymer. They love Miguel (Angel Jiménez) as well. So I think in terms of crowd, I expect it's pretty even."

Ian Poulter

A man who is always an English crowd favourite is Ian Poulter, the man who played host for Fitzpatrick's victory in 2015 as the event returned to the schedule for the first time in seven years.

Woburn, The Grove and this week Close House Golf Club have staged the tournament since its comeback, and Poulter believes it is capturing the imagination of the British fans.

"It's always a good crowd," he said. "You know what, the British Masters and Sky Sports, they have done a good job of bringing this event back into the calendar and you can tell just from today, the amount of people that we'll have out here fans-wise this week is going to be incredible.

"I think moving the event around the country has proved a pretty good (decision) and it gives everyone the opportunity to come out and watch some great players play some great golf."
