Ross Fisher was still in contention for a first Major title as final round play resumed in The US Open Championship at Bethpage Black.
With regulation play running over into Monday for the first time in 26 years, the players returned to the course at 0900 (1400 BST) on a breezy, but thankfully dry day in New York.
Fisher wasted little time in making his move, birdieing the par five fourth to take sole possession of third place on three under par.
A bogey at the fifth dropped him back to two under - the same score as Canada’s Mike Weir, who spectacularly holed a bunker shot at the seventh.
But with overnight leaders Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover slipping to six and five under respectively, Fisher retained a genuine chance of victory.
Barnes battled hard to salvage a series of pars on the resumption of play, but he eventually dropped his first shot of the day at the par four fifth.
Glover, meanwhile, carded bogeys at the third and fifth holes, leaving him two shots clear of third placed Hunter Mahan, who birdied the fourth and sixth either side of a bogey at the fifth.
Sweden’s Peter Hanson had moved into the chasing pack on one under following birdies at the fifth and sixth, putting him alongside world number two Phil Mickelson.
Denmark’s Soren Hansen was at level par through nine holes, the same score as David Duval, who had dropped down the field following a triple bogey six at the third.
Defending champion and world number one Tiger Woods and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell were a further shot back on one over, along with McDowell’s fellow countryman Rory McIlroy, who was three under for his final round with five holes remaining.
