Fisher safely though

Defending champion Ross Fisher staged a remarkable fightback to make the last 16 of the Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesin in Spain.

Four down after seven holes to American Ryan Moore, The Ryder Cup player still trailed by three with four to go, but won them all.

And because Moore had already been beaten by Luke Donald on the opening day of group games, Donald and Fisher were certain to go through to the knockout stage even before they faced each other this afternoon.

Moore followed Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, fellow South African Retief Goosen, Dane Anders Hansen and Korean Y E Yang in going out of the championship.

Oosthuizen's defeat to Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas, also on the last green, meant Vegas and Graeme McDowell were through.

Goosen was beaten by Nicolas Colsaerts - again at the 18th - and because of that the young Belgian and Rory McIlroy were certain to progress.

Then, when Australian Aaron Baddeley defeated Hansen on the final hole as well, Baddeley and World Number One Lee Westwood were also definitely through.

Only three of the eight groups had still to be decided.

Ian Poulter halved with Scot Paul Lawrie just as he had done with Francesco Molinari. As long as there was a winner in the afternoon clash between Lawrie and the Italian, Poulter - who missed a ten footer for the match on the last - was through.

Spain's Alvaro Quiros had his second victory, following up his win over Paul Casey with another over Dane Søren Kjeldsen. He was into the last 16 therefore, leaving Casey and Kjeldsen fighting it out to join him.

Meanwhile, there could yet be a three-man play-off in the other group after Miguel Angel Jiménez, conqueror of Masters Tournament champion Charl Schwartzel on Thursday, lost to Swede Johan Edfors.

If Edfors beat Schwartzel then Jiménez was through, but if the South African beat Edfors the trio would be level on points.

Casey was in real danger of tumbling out when he lost the first three holes to Kjeldsen. He did win the next, but then conceded the fifth and after seven remained three down.

Lawrie needed to come back against Molinari as well after turning two down, while it was heading towards a three-man play-off in Jimenez's group when Schwartzel started for home one up on Edfors.

The other possibility looming large was a clash between McIlroy and McDowell on Saturday morning for a place in the quarter-finals.

McIlroy trailed Colsaerts by three after seven, while McDowell was two up on Vegas after six.
