The event in Greensboro is the final event to qualify for the play-offs which begin with The Barclays next week but that is not a concern for Reed, whose place is already secure.

However, England’s Fisher – a four-time European Tour winner -began the week 164th and needing to climb into the top 125 to extend his season in the States.

Joint-leader after an opening 64, Fisher added a 69 to sit four behind Reed on seven under.

The American added a round of 64 to yesterday's 65 to sit on 11 under, one clear of compatriot John Huh and two shots ahead of Jordan Spieth.

Spieth's round of 66 was enough to put him two clear of Korean Charlie Wi, Fisher, Bob Estes, Rory Sabbatini and Brian Harman.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia carded a level par 70 to remain five under and tied for 14th.
