Fisher keen to draw on Celtic Manor memories

Ross Fisher is hoping his previous positive memories from The Celtic Manor Resort can inspire him at this week's ISPS HANDA Wales Open.

The 39-year-old Englishman was part of Europe's victorious Ryder Cup team in Wales a decade ago, contributing two points for Colin Montgomerie's side.

Fisher has also had two top-ten finishes in this event and was tied for 27th last week over the same layout in the Celtic Classic, shooting 68 and 67 at the weekend.

“To be here 10 years ago, to come back last week and play - the course played very differently last week, a lot firmer, a lot fierier than the Ryder Cup,” he said.

“This week who knows? I know we’re in for a strong breeze so hopefully it will play a bit different from last week and hopefully I can continue my good play from last week and carry on into this week.

“I played well last week, I had moments where I could have shot really good scores, apart from one hole where I had two double bogeys and a bogey – if you wipe those off suddenly a half decent week becomes a really good week.

“So yeah, just trying to take the positives from playing well, finishing strongly on Saturday and Sunday and trying to take that momentum, get ready and be ready come Thursday.

“Even coming back in 2011 perhaps to 2014, because I’d been in the Ryder Cup I had my own locker with my name on and the Ryder Cup, I have that every time I come down here which is pretty cool.

“You can only get up for playing this week when you see all the photos in the hotel, in the lift, in the lobby area, it brings back such good memories. Ryder Cups are very special and something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life and career.

“I’d like to make another one, European players are stronger than ever, so to try and make that team I’m going to have to play very very well just like I did in 2009/2010 to make that team, but my goal is to make another one so fingers crossed we can play well.”
