First cut is the deepest for Donaldson

Jamie Donaldson’s second round of 70 ensured he made the cut in the Masters Tournament for the first time, but the Welshman will not be resting on his laurels as he seeks to spring a surprise over the weekend.

Donaldson was named The Race to Dubai Golfer for March due to his runner-up finish in the WGC-Cadillac Championship, and the two-time European Tour champion has continued his fine form on his second visit to Augusta National.

The Ryder Cup hopeful currently sits in a share of tenth place alongside Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher on one under par but, despite trailing leader Bubba Watson of America by just six shots, caution and concentration will be the watchwords for Donaldson over the next two days.

He said: “There are so many difficult holes out here, so many holes where you can take big numbers that you’ve just got to be so focused on what you’re doing.  That’s what I’m trying to do, not really pay much attention to what’s happening on the leaderboard.

“The golf course is mentally difficult. You are going to make bogeys out there, but bogeys aren’t disasters – it’s the doubles and triples that kill you. Occasionally you’re going to drop shots, but you’ve just got to try to make it up with birdies. That’s the story of Augusta, I suppose.

“I scored well again today. I didn’t play as well from tee to green as I can over the past two days, but I scored well. I made quite a few good up and downs, so it’s crucial to try to keep the momentum going out there. It’s really tough, but I’m really enjoying the challenge and I hope that continues over the next two days.”
