Fernandez-Castaño overcomes Molinari

Swede Carl Pettersson and Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño won the two remaining first round games at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson.

The event was in its third day, but Wednesday's freakish snowstorm had put it way behind schedule.

Pettersson set up a second round clash with Rory McIlroy's conqueror Shane Lowry, beating American Rickie Fowler at the first extra hole.

They returned to the 18th tee with Fowler one down and he made a second successive birdie to square things up, only to bogey the 19th.

In a contest between two of The European Tour’s finest ball strikers, Fernandez-Castaño defeated Italian Ryder Cup player Francesco Molinari two up.

The Spaniard won the short 16th and 18th with pars to earn the right to play American Charles Howell III, who pulled off the other big shock of the round by knocking out second seed Tiger Woods.

By then the second round was under way and in a meeting of two Europeans Ryder Cup stars Justin Rose won the opening hole for the second time this week, but lost the long second to big-hitting Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts.

Rose then fell two behind when he bogeyed the fifth and could not match his opponent's tee shot to five feet on the next.

Sergio Garcia was level with American Matt Kuchar after four and 2010 winner Ian Poulter all square with Bo Van Pelt after two.

Officials decided to play just the second round today and then hope to cram in both the third round and the quarter-finals tomorrow, although there was the possibility of frost delaying things further.

Rose had a real mountain to climb when he bogeyed again on the seventh and fell three down.

He might have lost the long eighth as well, but holed from seven feet for a half.

Van Pelt birdied the fourth from six feet to edge in front of Poulter, while Bubba Watson's birdie at the second gave him the lead over his Ryder Cup team-mate Jim Furyk.

Rose finally had another success on the ninth with a 14 foot putt and when he holed from the same distance two holes later it was for eagle, reducing his deficit to one.

However, he followed that by plugging his ball in a bunker at the short next and by failing to get up and down was two down with six holes to go.

Poulter turned things round against Van Pelt. After a tee shot to three feet on the sixth, his par at the seventh was good enough with his opponent fluffing a chip, and The Ryder Cup ace then pitched close on the eighth to go two up.

New tournament favourite Luke Donald, winner in 2011, made a really poor start against another American, Scott Piercy. He double-bogeyed the first and lost the second as well.

Garcia and Kuchar turned level and Watson moved two ahead of Furyk in a match which included both of them double-bogeying the seventh.
