Fernandez-Castaño eyes special Open d'Italia anniversary

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño is eyeing a special anniversary celebration with his family at the 70° Open d'Italia when he defends the €1.5 million title at Golf Club Torino from September 19-22.

The Spaniard secured the trophy in some style last year, carding a final round of eight under par 64 to capture the sixth European Tour victory of his career.

As he prepares to defend his title at this year’s new venue, Golf Club Torino, Fernandez-Castaño recalled how he has to thank his wife, Alicia, more than anyone for making sure he got his hands on the trophy 12 months ago.

“It was a very special victory and there was a funny story behind it,” said Fernandez-Castaño. “On the Tuesday of the tournament week I was still back at home in Madrid because our kids were starting school.

“I said to my wife that I didn’t really want to go to Italy. But she said ‘Come on, we’ve got the tickets, we have to go’. She was desperate to go because she has some very good friends on the Tour and she’d arranged to see them.

“So that was the only reason we went, and I ended up winning the tournament. It was very special because it was my first victory when my wife was travelling with me. That made it extra special. I have to thank her for many, many things, and that was one more!”

Fernandez-Castaño is not fazed by the change of venue for his title defence. As a former tournament promoter on The European Tour, the 32 year old has nothing but praise for the Italian Golf Federation’s commitment to the country’s national open.

“The Italian Federation do a great job in putting on a fantastic tournament,” he continued. “Considering the small budget they have and a few issues with sponsorship, they put on brilliant tournaments at fantastic venues.

“I love the city, and as a Spaniard we have so many things in common with the Italians. It’s always great fun to play that tournament and spend time in Italy. It felt like I was the home favourite last year. I know Matteo Manassero was doing well, but when he was out of the equation on the last few holes I could feel all the crowd supporting me. It made it a very special moment having so many cheers for me.

“I know it’s at a different venue this year, but I’m very much looking forward to being defending champion and hopefully having another fantastic week in a fantastic country."
