Starting at the tenth tee at 9.40am, Stanley made his first gain of the day at the 11th before picking up further shots on the 13th and 14th holes.

The American then closed his front nine with three straight birdies from the par-five 16th to get to six under par and establish an early three shot lead over the chasing pack at Firestone Country Club.

Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello was in a tie for second on three under after making a birdie-eagle start to his first round, alongside Australian Marc Leishman.
