Fantasy Five to Watch at the NH Collection Open

Ahead of the NH Collection Open in Spain, europeantour.com stats man Steve Doughty picks out his five to watch out for this week at La Reserve de Sotogrande.

Andy Sullivan

Jorge Campillo

Yet to win on The European Tour. Finished second on two occasions, at the 2012 Avantha Masters and the 2014 Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa. From his 11 appearances this season, he has made nine cuts, with six top 25 finishes. Finished in a tie for 11th place in the last European Tour stroke play event, at the Trophée Hassan II.

Alejandro Cañizares

The man of the moment, fresh from his wire-to-wire victory at the Trophée Hassan II. Should he win this week, he would become the first Spanish player to win consecutive stroke play events since Sergio Garcia, who followed up his victory at the 2011 Castelló Masters by winning the Andalucia Masters. He is attached to the nearby Club de Golf de Valderrama and has a good knowledge of the course. Has made every cut on The European Tour dating back to the 2013 Omega European Masters.

David Horsey

After missing his opening two cuts of the season, he has shown a fine level of consistency in his next three events. He was tied tenth in the Joburg Open, tied third in the Africa Open and tied eighth in the Trophée Hassan II. He is 42 under par for his last 12 rounds.

Andy Sullivan

Like Jorge Campillo, he is still looking for his first European Tour success. Will have been buoyed by his career-best finish at the Trophée Hassan II, where he came second courtesy of a final day 63 – his lowest European Tour round. Has recorded two top five finishes in his last three events, including tied fifth in the Joburg Open. Eight of his last 12 European Tour rounds have been in the 60s.

Paul Waring

The third member of the ‘five to watch’ who is yet to enter the winners’ circle. Three weeks ago, he produced his best performance of the season at the Trophée Hassan II, where he finished tied eighth. Has found a decent level of consistency in recent tournaments, finishing tied 13th in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and tied 21st in the Tshwane Open.
