In 15 years of trying, first as an amateur then as a professional, and more latterly as a member, Nick Faldo had not won so much as a monthly medal round Wentworth Club’s West course.

But in 1989 he arrived following his victory in the Masters Tournament exuding an aura of supremacy and duly won the second PGA Championship to be sponsored by Volvo.

Faldo shared the first round lead on 67 with defending champion Ian Woosnam, the second and third round lead with Craig Parry before with a final 67, albeit that he was briefly caught by a charging Woosnam, he pulled clear to win by two from the Welshman with Parry third and Seve Ballesteros, who closed 65-66, tied fourth with Mark McNulty and Christy O’Connor Jnr.

So Faldo’s name was finally engraved on one of those boards in the clubhouse - well, Wentworth does like to honour the achievement of its members.
