Evergreen Jiménez taking another shot at history

Miguel Angel Jiménez has achieved so much in his long career that he will forever be synonymous with The European Tour and this week at the UBS Hong Kong Open he will go in search of another piece of history.

The 51 year old will be taking part in his 663rd event since 1983, a Tour career that has yielded 21 wins and seen him become the oldest winner in history - a record he has broken three times.

Two of those record-breaking wins came here at Hong Kong Golf Club in 2012 and at the first playing of the tournament in the 2014 season. They followed his wins at the event in 2005 and 2008 and took him level with Hsieh Yung-yo as a four-time winner in Fanling.

A fifth victory this week would not only make him the only man to win the event five times but would also see him join a select club of players who have won the same event five times on The European Tour, joining Tiger Woods, Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer.

And while the evergreen Spaniard may have taken his first steps onto The Senior Tour in the past two seasons, he shows no signs of letting up on The European Tour, sitting 23rd in the Race to Dubai with five top tens this term, including a tie for second at the BMW PGA Championship.

The numbers and achievements are enough to make your head spin but, as always, Jiménez is taking a laid back approach as he looks to write another chapter in his European Tour story.

"I'm playing pretty well and hitting the ball better so I am feeling good," he said. "I always feel good when I come here to Fanling.

"I'm looking forward to it of course. Hopefully I can play well for the first few days and then we see what happens at the weekend.

It would be great to win obviously. I don't think anyone has won this event five times so it would be a special moment for me if I can make some more history here but we have to wait and see - Miguel Angel Jiménez

A stellar field has assembled in the Far East with World Number Seven Justin Rose and World Number Eight Dustin Johnson among those battling it out and Jiménez, currently 74th in the World Rankings, is eager to show he can still mix it with the best.

"It's great to see such a good field here this week," he said. "We have Major winners, some of the highest ranked players in the world and some of the biggest names in the game and that can only be good for the tournament.

"You want to have the biggest and best fields as possible and you want to try and beat these guys to show you are still competitive."
