Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters - Day one digest

Everything you need to know from the first day at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande.

Campillo

Morrison went low to lead the way before testing conditions made life extremely difficult for the later starters on day one of the 2023 Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.

Here is everything you need to know from the first day at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande.

Morrison out in front

The players were faced with extremely windy conditions on Thursday, but you wouldn't know it from looking at James Morrison's scorecard. The Englishman fired an eagle, seven birdies and a single bogey as he opened with a superb 64 to jump to the top of the leaderboard, albeit with the conditions only worsening towards the back end of his round. He finished day one with a one-shot lead over nearest challenger Nick Bachem.

Defending champion loving life in Andalucia

Home favourite Adrian Otaegui secured a spectacular six-shot victory at nearby Real Club Valderrama 12 months ago to win this title. And he impressed again at a new venue, carding six birdies in a spotless 66 to sit two shots behind leader Morrison. He spoke of his love for this part of the world, saying: "(Being defending champion) is very nice, very special. I love this part of Spain, I love Sotogrande, I love coming here."

Bachem has Dubai in his sights

After firing a 65 to sit second on the leaderboard, Germany's Bachem revealed his goal is to tee it up at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai next month. The Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates will once again play host to the top 50 golfers available in the Race to Dubai Rankings in partnership with Rolex and Bachem - who currently sits 57th - is hoping to be among that number. He said: "Dubai is my big goal, to play Dubai. Having a good finish to the season would be amazing and you never know - we've got a couple more tournaments with big points and prize money so if you have a good finish to the season anything can happen."
