Espen Kofstad is aiming for more of the same over the weekend after firing eight birdies on day two of the 2022 Portugal Masters to boost his hopes of keeping his playing rights for 2023.
With this week's event being the last chance for players to earn points to keep their DP World Tour cards, there was extra pressure on some to make the cut at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course.
Having opened with a level-par 71 on a day of very low scoring on Thursday, the Norwegian - who started the week 114th on the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex knowing he needs to stay in the top 117 to retain playing privileges - had work to do in his second round but eased any fears of missing the cut with an early birdie burst, reeling off four in a row from the second hole.
Kofstad picked up four more shots in four holes from the tenth before bogeys at the 16th and 18th saw him sign for a 65 and head into the weekend on six under par.
He said: "It feels amazing. I played really good on Tuesday in the practice round and I felt like I had a good round in me.
"Yesterday I was a bit disappointed as I was also on for a good round in the beginning and then dropped four shots in a row. Today I managed to keep it going and I was eight under through 14, which was quite nice."
Kofstad vowed to adopt the same approach over the weekend as he looks to cement his card.
He added: "I'm just going to try and play like today.
"I played really free, had a nice sense of calm the whole day and we’ll try and keep it going for 18 holes tomorrow."
