England targeting World Cup glory

Ian Poulter is keen to add the World Cup to his glittering CV when he represents Team England alongside Tyrrell Hatton at The Metropolitan Golf Club this week.

The 42 year old is well-known for his performances at The Ryder Cup, having won the biennial contest five times in six appearances.

But Poulter has never before lifted the ISPS HANDA Melbourne World Cup of Golf trophy and he is hoping to do so this week in a part of the world he holds in high regard.

He said: "I have never won the World Cup and I would like to.

"This is a course which I really got to enjoy over the last couple of days - all of the Sandbelt courses are great.

"So if Tyrrell and I can go out there and play well and obviously pick up a trophy, then that would be pretty special. I like playing this type of golf."

Both Poulter and Hatton played a big part in Europe's stunning victory over the United States in France in September but Poulter does not think their recent experience of team golf gives them an advantage over the rest of the field.

He added: "I don't see it as an advantage just because we played a team event probably two months ago.

"I think when you look at all of the teams in depth, there are a lot of good teams here to beat.

"So I know obviously on our rankings we're supposed to finish up there, but sometimes that's difficult."

Hatton would also like to taste victory in Australia this week.

He said: "It would be nice to win down here. It's my first time down in Melbourne so it would cap a memorable week."

Germany's Martin Kaymer said he is hoping for a successful week when he partners Max Kieffer for the first time.

"Obviously we play on a great golf course here this week," said Kaymer. "And playing with Max, we've never played before.

"I think it could be a successful week in many ways. Maybe we can learn from each other's games because you get quite close on the golf course.

"You need to talk about your weaknesses and about your strengths. I think it doesn't matter how good or bad you are, you can always learn from each other."

It's such a good honour to come back again and we're looking forward to playing this event and hopefully we can get one more step - Haotong Li

Team USA's Matt Kuchar, who will play alongside Kyle Stanley, is a big fan of this week's host course.

He said: "Metropolitan's fantastic. I was a little bit nervous about the weather. I kind of thought we would have some cold rain, but it was sunshine, beautiful weather.

"The course is a little bit soft at the moment with the overnight rain, but really, really playable."

Chinese pair Haotong Li and Ashun Wu are hoping to excel together again this year after finishing in a tie for second last time out in 2016.

Li said: "It's such a good honour to come back again and we're looking forward to playing this event and hopefully we can get one more step."
