Elson tops first Re-Rank of 2012

England’s Jamie Elson has topped the first Re-Rank of the 2012 season, thanks chiefly to his runner-up finish at the Joburg Open.

Qualifying School graduate Elson collected €149,500 for his performance at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, where he opened and closed with rounds of 63 to finish one shot shy of South African Branden Grace’s 17 under par aggregate winning total.

One week previously, Tjaart van der Walt had also finished runner-up at the Africa Open, a result which earned the South African €115,000 in prize money and helped him to second place behind Elson in the Re-Rank.

Scotland’s Craig Lee, who finished tied eighth in the same tournament, finished third in the Re-Rank with earnings of €76,201, whilst Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren came fourth on €54,750 thanks mainly to his tied fourth finish at last week’s Madeira Islands Open – Portugal.

The first Re-Rank, which gives players in Category 11 the chance to improve their ranking, will come into effect at next week’s BMW PGA Championship.

The second Re-Rank of players who earned their cards at last year’s Qualifying School Final Stage or through finishing in positions 11-20 in the 2011 Challenge Tour Rankings will take place on Monday August 27, 2012.
