Edoardo Molinari felt he produced his best putting performance for six years as a 66 put him right in contention heading into the final round of the BMW International Open.
The Ryder Cup vice captain shared the lead after day one at Golfclub München Eichenried and while he fell back with a 74 on day two, he matched his opening score on Moving Day to get to ten under in Munich.
The Italian felt his ball-striking was not as good on Saturday as in rounds one and two but he made up for that with the short stick, making four putts from between 10 and 20 feet in his seven birdies as he recovered from a bogey on the first.
Since claiming his third DP World Tour victory at the 2017 Trophée Hassan II, Molinari has endured something of a roller coaster, finishing outside the top 120 on the Rankings in both 2018 and 2020.
But he has also recorded ten top tens and the 42-year-old is in no doubt as to the source of his inconsistency.
"It was very good considering the fact I probably hit the ball worse than the last two days," he said.
"I finally had a good day on the greens today and it was good.
"I don't like to think in if and what, I've been struggling on the greens for a long time and today I finally had a good day on the greens, probably the best day in the last six years.
"That doesn't say a lot because I've been putting very, very poorly but sometimes it's good to have a good day on the greens."
