Edberg sets clubhouse target

Swede Pelle Edberg was one hole away from completing one of the best rounds of his European Tour career when a thunderstorm halted play at Pula in Mallorca.

Six under par for his second round, Edberg had moved into a share of the lead on five under with South African James Kingston, who had yet to resume after his opening 65, at the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca.

The 31 year old lost his European Tour card at the end of last season and then failed to survive his tenth trip to the Qualifying School, but appeared to be making the most of a chance to put his name back on the map.

Setting off again six adrift of Kingston, Edberg, known for his wide headbands, birdied four of his first seven holes on the back nine, bogeyed the 17th, but then picked up more shots on the fifth, sixth and eighth.

Moments later, however, there was a bolt of lightning nearby and then a loud crack of thunder, which quickly led to a suspension in the action.

Spain's Alejandro Cañizares, son of former Ryder Cup player Jose Maria and winner of the 2006 Russian Open in his first season as a professional, had continued his bid for a second victory by reaching the turn in 33 to be four under.

But then came a double bogey six at the 427 yard first.

Once he was able to get back on the course Edberg parred his last hole for a 64 which matched his lowest round on The European Tour.

And with Kingston kicking off again with a bogey, he led by one with his five under halfway total of 135.
