Argentina’s Rafa Echenique shot a three under par 68 to share the lead with Emilio Domínguez after the opening round of the 81st Campeonato Abierto OSDE del Centro presentado por Claro.
The pair lead by one stroke from César Monasterio and Manuel Relancio, another duo of Argentines, in the Tour de las Americas event.
Two-time Major Champion Ángel Cabrera started slowly with a three over par 74 for a share of 46th spot.
His friend and Senior Tour star Eduardo Romero is another stroke further back in a tie for 65th.
“I struck the ball quite well today and whenever I missed I managed to get up and down. This is a very tough course and I think the key for me was to stay patient after any bad shot,” said Echenique, who birdied the seventh, eighth and 17th on his way to a terrific bogey-free performance early in the day.
