Early birdies put Kjeldsen in contention

An early birdie blitz saw Søren Kjeldsen surge up the leaderboard on day three of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Dane began his third round six shots behind midway leader Ross Fisher after posting scores of 71 and 68 on Thursday and Friday respectively.

But a fast start at St Andrews on Saturday saw Kjeldsen close the gap to two strokes, with five birdies on the front nine taking the 41 year old into the turn on ten under.

Fisher, meanwhile, moved to 12 under after carding two birdies and a bogey in his first eight holes at Carnoustie.

Kjeldsen opened his third round with two pars before picking up his first shot of the day at the third.

He then reeled off three straight birdies from the fifth to get to nine under before making another gain at the ninth to reach the turn in 31.

He sat in a share of second place alongside Sweden's Joakim Lagergren and Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, who were also playing at St Andrews on Saturday.
