Eagle lands for Westwood at Carnoustie

The eagle landed for England’s Lee Westwood at Carnoustie to ignite his challenge for the 136th Open Championship.

The 34 year old Englishman encountered the rare bird at the 514 yard 14th hole, a superb three – which featured a drive and five iron to 15 feet – and which helped him to a second round 70 and a one under par total of 141.

“I’ve been struggling all year apart from the time I won in Spain,” he said. “I need to get more consistency in my game so I went to see a guy in Birmingham. He got all the cameras on me and helped me see where I was going wrong.

“I felt I just lost sight of what I was trying to do but I got more focused and started working on it. It felt like a drastic change but it also felt like what it felt like when I was playing well in 1999 and 2000 so I was able to adapt to the new style.

“I’m very excited about the weekend. I’ve been looking forward to this championship all year and it’s nice to have got straight in there over the first two rounds instead of battling to get into contention. I feel anything under par will be right in there at the end of the week.”
