The World Number 36, the highest-ranked player in the field, led by one overnight but immediately birdied the first from 18 feet then chipped in from the bunker at the second at Reale Club de Golf de Sevilla.

That took the Englishman to seven under par, two clear of Dane Søren Kjeldsen, who matched Dyson’s birdie at the first.

Jorge Campillo birdied the second to join compatriot Pablo Larrazábal on four under as the pair looked to mark the 100th anniversary of the tournament with a home win.

Italian Ryder Cup star Francesco Molinari also made the most of the best scoring conditions of the week, taking advantage of the much weaker breeze to birdie two of the first three and join Alejandro Cañizares in a tie for fifth.
