Scotland’s Ross Drummond moved into a narrow lead midway through the second day of the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters amidst tricky conditions at Woburn Golf Club.
Despite blanket blue skies, a stiff breeze and a firm, fast Duke’s Course presented limited scoring opportunities for the 72-man field assembled for the 13th edition of the Senior Masters, as overnight leader Luis Carbonetti of Argentina made back-to-back bogeys from the sixth to slip back to three under par for the tournament.
Senior Tour rookie Colin Montgomerie bogeyed the first hole to also slip back to three under par for the tournament alongside Philip Walton, who was level through eight despite a double bogey at the fifth, and two-time winner Carl Mason.
Spain’s Miguel Angel Martin found a pair of birdies after the turn to bolster the group in a tie for second at three under par, while three-time 2012 victor Tim Thelen of the United States was also two under par for the round as the afternoon progressed.
But it was 56 year old Prestwick man Drummond on top as Moving Day continued, firing a flawless front-nine 33 thanks to birdies at the opening par five first and the short sixth to reach four under par, one clear of the congested chasing pack.
Drummond, one of the Senior Tour’s most consistent performers over the last six seasons, has not had the greatest of years thus far but a return to Woburn, where he finished tied for fifth place in 2012, looked like providing the fillip for a return to form and another chance to chase his first victory.
