Donaldson aiming to take advantage of familiar surroundings

Jamie Donaldson believes there is only one thing that would improve the feeling of winning a first European Tour title at the 253rd attempt - doing it on home soil.

The Welshman arrives at the ISPS Handa Wales Open having made eight cuts in eight starts this season, and while there have been some brilliant rounds - a 61 in Morocco and 65 in Sicily particular highlights - the 36 year old is yet to find a way into the winner’s circle.

Having finished eighth at The Celtic Manor Resort last season, Donaldson hopes home support can finally see him end his 11-year wait for a maiden victory.

“My goal in any tournament is to win, and it would be great,” said Donaldson. “But it would be especially fantastic to win here. So we just need to play well this week and put four good rounds together.”

This is the 13th staging of the event in south Wales, and there is yet to be a home winner.

“It's not something that we talk about massively between the lads me,” added Donaldson. “It's obviously extra special when it's your home tournament, but everybody wants to win every tournament they play in. It's particularly special to win your home Open - everyone's looking forward to doing that.

“It's great coming back down to Wales. I've played here loads, and we had a good tournament here last year, not too far away. The weather looks pretty good for the week, so looking forward to it.

“I'm feeling all right. I've had quite a few decent rounds this year but form in tournaments has been lacking, consistency has not been there so far.”
