· Defending Champion, Paul Casey will attempt to become the first Englishman to make a successful defence of the HSBC World Match Play Championship. Other English wins came from Nick Faldo (1989 and 1992) and Lee Westwood (2000).
· Ian Woosnam, with his victory in 2001, not only became the oldest winner, aged 43, but the only player to win the HSBC World Match Play Championship in three different decades. His other victories came in 1987 and 1990.
· In the field of 16, there are three former winners – Paul Casey (2006), Ernie Els (1994, 1995, 1996, 2002, 2003 and 2004) and Colin Montgomerie (1999).
