Thomas Detry kept up his red hot form at Heythrop Park Resort by shooting another bogey-free round to take a four shot lead after the second round of the Bridgestone Challenge.
The Belgian smashed the course record on day one, firing 12 birdies on his way to a round of 60 and he made another good start in the Oxfordshire countryside with three gains in his first nine holes.
The European Challenge Tour rookie, who has not missed a cut this season, then picked up two further birdies over his next nine holes to sign for a five under par 67 and reach 17 under par overall at the competition’s halfway stage.
And the 23 year old, who only turned professional in June this year, is confident that he can carry on his remarkable scoring over the weekend.
“I just tried to tee off this morning with nothing in my mind and treat it as a new round,” said Detry, who is a former World Amateur Number Eight.
“After a 12 under par round yesterday it was tough to match that level of scoring again with something similar.
“I got off to a pretty slow start after making a par at both the par fives then I hit one close on the par three 15th which got my round going. To go on and make another bogey-free round with five birdies was great and I am so happy to have done that.
“It was actually a lot different to yesterday. Teeing off this morning it was quite cold and breezy and my irons were flying short as well, so it was not easy.
“Other than that the greens were a little bit better this morning and the course is looking in really good shape – I am excited for the weekend.
“Going forward I am just going to try and focus on my own game and try not to think about where I am on the leaderboard. I will do what I have been doing, just keep on going, and recreate what I did today and the day before.
“I think the key will be trying to play without expectations and I will just try to play my own game and put in two more solid rounds of golf.”
Detry’s nearest challenger is South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence who made seven birdies and no bogeys to card a seven under par round of 65 and reach 13 under par overall.
Spain’s Scott Fernandez, who played at The Open Championship at Royal Troon this year after coming through a qualifier at Gailes Links, shot the best round of the day with an eight under par 64 to climb up the leaderboard in Oxfordshire.
